Quantitative modeling of the public health risk impact of foodborne pathogens in Nigerian aquacultured catfish (Clarias gariepinus) | ||

The present study quantitatively ascertained the baseline contribution of aquacultured contaminated catfish to the burden of foodborne illnesses in Nigeria. Identification of predictor foodborne pathogen was performed with phenotypic and molecular techniques. The baseline risk of predictor foodborne pathogen was quantified with FDA-iRisk stochastic software, version 4.0. Predictor foodborne pathogen was identified as Bacillus cereus. Predictor pathogen was isolated from fresh adult catfish at a relatively high concentration (≤ 5.79 log10 CFU g -1 in grow-out pond systems) that was significantly above standard bacteriological limit (< 3 log10 CFU g -1), thus, indicating that foodborne pathogens may probably be of significant health consequence in Nigerian catfish aquaculture systems. This probable significant health consequence was further corroborated by a predicted baseline risks which indicated that in the absence of adequate microbial mitigation protocols, 119 potential immune-compromised consumers were most likely to fall ill per 1000 potential immune-compromised consumers that were exposed to the contaminated catfish. This baseline risk corresponds to a predicted baseline burden of US$12500000 from 12300000 cases, thus, confirming the gross contamination of the Nigerian-aquacultured catfish with foodborne pathogens. | ||
