Investigation of the Effects of Rail Transportion on Urban Development (A Case Study of the City of Mashhad)

چکیده

The present study attempts to investigate the effects of rail transportation on urban development. To this end, an applied research methodology is used based on an explorative explanative research approach via a qualitative research method. The statistical population of the study is comprised of transportation and urban planning experts, among whom 12 people were selected as the research sample through targeted snowball sampling method. In this research, open, axial and selective coding content analysis based on grounded theory are used to analyze the data. The results revealed rail transportation leads to corridor development of the city of Mashhad through the two components of quantity & quality. Corridor development provides the framework for formulating urban development strategies including livability, competitiveness, bankability, and optimal urban management. In addition, infrastructures such as information and communication systems, energy infrastructure and human resources as background conditions and external factors such as (natural, economic, social and political factors) and internal factors (ownership pattern, organizational factors, and governmental policies) as intervening factors affect the development strategies of Mashhad and ultimately lead to sustainable urban development or, in other words, economic, physical, social and environmental development in Mashhad. Therefore, the prompt development of rail transport, especially urban trains, is recommended as a basis for public transportation system in urban planning.
