Aberrations (e.g., astigmatism) usually exist in the mirror-based adaptive optics (AO) ophthalmic system whose imaging path contains many tilting optical elements. We propose a systematic calibration method for the AO imaging system and demonstrate its use in a spectrum domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Direct slope algorithm was used to control the deformable mirror for aberration correction based on the reading from Shack Hartmann wavefront sensor. Meanwhile, an iterative stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm was used to calibrate the uncommon-path errors between the imaging and wave-sensing paths. The imaging results demonstrated reliable imaging quality after system calibration. The measured lateral resolution using a USAF1951 Target was 2.19 μm, very close to the theoretical resolution of 2.08 μm. After adding +2D astigmatism to the system, the lateral resolution was 2.46 μm after correction. Our study provides a reliable calibration method for the ophthalmic AO system instrumentation, which could not only be used in SD-OCT system but also used in other ophthalmic modalities, such as scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, fudus camera etc. | ||
